Our story

We are Lorena & Laura, the founders of bae. Our friendship began when we were 13 years old in the Kitzbühel mountains – today we share not only a love of sports, but also our vision: healthy, delicious snacks for everyone. In 2023, we launched our soft oat bars – with 40% less sugar and valuable prebiotics for a healthy gut flora.

Our snacks are the perfect companion for everyday life and adventures. But bae stands for more than just nutrition: Together with Fondo Semillas, we advocate for the rights of women, girls, trans* and inter* people – because real change begins with working together.

Our founding story

2018

The year of our founding

We'd long dreamed of starting our own food startup together. Simply because we're both huge fans of good food and healthy snacks. In 2018, Laura was traveling in Mexico – and tried tamarind for the first time. The sweet and sour combination captivated us, and that's how the idea for our first snack was born: a raw tamarind bar.

From then on, everything happened really fast. We took the plunge and founded our company at the age of 20 – without any start-up capital, but with plenty of heart, energy, and maybe a little bit of naivety. We spent hours in our home kitchen perfecting the recipe and, along the way, learned everything about production, packaging, and ingredients.

We didn't know back then that it would take a full 1.5 years from the initial idea until we could finally hold our first delivery in our hands. But that was precisely the beginning of our adventure.

2020

From the first delivery to the supermarket shelf

At the beginning of 2020, the time had finally come: our first big delivery arrived at our home. And to be honest – we just stood there thinking: Okay... and now what? Our living room was full of snacks, but we didn't yet have a real plan for what to do next.

So we got in the car and just drove off – from one organic market to the next, with boxes in the trunk and a mixture of excitement and improvisation in tow. Little by little, we got our products onto the shelves.

And then came the first major milestone: Three months later, we were able to pitch our product range to a large supermarket chain – and were actually accepted. By the end of the year, our snacks were on shelves throughout Austria.

Between these moments lay a few rather turbulent months: We had to change our packaging material twice, learned a lot, and stumbled along the way. But when we first spotted our products in the supermarket, we knew: It was all worth it.

2021

New products

Over the past few months, we've had to overcome several obstacles. We repeatedly ran into shortages of tamarind – our most important raw material. Sourcing it proved more difficult than expected. Fortunately, however, we found a solution each time.

Despite these challenges, we were able to launch new products. First, our dessert bars, raw food bars in Raspberry Peanut and Caramelized Almond flavors, both covered in chocolate.

A little later, our protein bars arrived, which we had worked on for a very long time and whose delivery we eagerly awaited. Upon first opening the boxes, we were briefly disappointed, as the foil printing wasn't quite what we had expected. However, their taste immediately won us over, and they instantly became a hit among our friends.

2022-2023

New beginnings based on gut feeling

The last few months have been really tough. It became increasingly difficult to get our bars onto the shelves – most of the time we just heard: "The market is too saturated." On top of that, hardly anyone in Germany knew us, which was obviously a huge disadvantage. We slowly started to have doubts, and we knew: something had to change.

Privately, we became increasingly interested in gut-friendly nutrition during this time, and at some point we thought: Why don't we simply make our products gut-friendly? The only question was: How could we do that without a budget? We weren't entirely sure, but we had a feeling it was the right idea, and so far we had found a solution for every problem.

So, step by step, we changed our entire product range: from raw food bars to soft oat bars (later we added the Bites) and from the barefood way to bae. For this, we also needed a new manufacturer, because our old one didn't produce oat bars, but we found one too.

In mid-2023, the time had finally come: our oat bars were launched in Austria. This period was certainly not easy, but looking back from 2025, we can say: it was the best decision we ever made.

2024

The Lion's Den

After an initial unsuccessful application, we made it onto "Die Höhle der Löwen" (The Lion's Den) on our second attempt. Following intensive preparation, including over 30 pages of potential questions, the call finally came: We were allowed to pitch! After hectic preparation and a long journey, we delivered a strong performance despite our nerves. The pitch flew by, the "lions" were very friendly, and we secured a deal that subsequently fell through.

The appearance enabled us to launch our large nationwide rollout together with the two best-known drugstore chains, dm and Rossmann. - The experience was unforgettable.
